Overflow from the nearby Suwannee River brings sediment to these interlaced tidal channels on the western Florida coast north of Cedar Key. Depths offshore are so shallow that ocean waves rarely stir the sediment. Instead, tidal currents flowing to and fro each day slowly move sand and silt to deeper water.

Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge south of Tallahassee, Florida, is only infrequently visited even though it lies close to places with irresistible names like Kitchen Cove, Panacea, and Alligator Island. The refuge is home to endangered wood storks, West Indian manatees, and leatherback turtles.
