The world’s largest known wave was generated by a giant free-falling avalanche in 1958, triggered by an earthquake on the Fairweather Fault that runs across the back of Lituya Bay. The wave, which traveled toward the bottom of this picture, was still 200 feet high as it left the bay. Vegetation differences, clearly visible on the left side of the picture, reveal trim lines where the wave ripped away old-growth timber on both sides of the inlet.
