veryone is familiar with the Spanish conquistadors. In the process of opening new lands to European settlement, they conquered, enslaved, and killed native people. It’s an old story, but it’s not the only one.
In 1528 the conquistador Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was
shipwrecked off the coast of Texas and rescued by Karankawa Indians. For the next eight years he wandered through the New World, living with native tribes, learning their languages and their ways, and learning that they were human beings like him.
When he was finally reunited with his countrymen, Cabeza de Vaca
was a changed man.
This is the true story of a man’s journey of discovery - of a land, of a
people, and of himself.

THE READ-ALONGTM MAP
For both the explorer and the reader, the key element of any voyage of discovery is the map. While the explorer can have the map in front of him, the reader usually cannot. There's nothing more frustrating than having to flip back to read a map in the middle of reading a story.
For this book, Mikaya Press has designed a Read-AlongTM Map. This gatefold page makes it possible to read about an explorer's travels, and follow them on a map at the same time. |
